America Ferrera - Ugly Betty becomes ugly

America Ferrera, who plays Ugly Betty on a successful new TV series was born in Los Angeles in 1984 of Honduran parents. She grew up in the West Valley in a well-to-do middle class neighborhood and enjoyed all the benefits and opportunities of growing up in the United States. She attends the University of Southern California and majors in Theater Arts and International Relations.

She has enjoyed a life of freedom to pursue whatever she wanted to achieve in life and has attained both success and celebrity.

Despite the opportunities she has enjoyed, especially when compared with the opportunities available to the people of Central America, where her family is from, she feels that America is not free and won't be free until Bush is gone.

Brent Baker reports on Newsbusters the following dialogue at the Independent Spirit Award ceremony on February 24th:

Zach Braff: “You know America, here's a little interesting tidbit you probably don't know about me. My middle name is Israel. We're both named after countries. “

America Ferrera: “Wow, that is interesting.”

Braff: “So do you think that you have any traits in common with the country that is your namesake?”

Ferrera: “Well, you know, I mean I guess I'm a free-spirited person and America's supposedly the 'land of the free,' right?”

Braff: “Well, I guess.”

Ferrera: “Or at least we will be in 2008.” [loud applause] Well how about you, Zach, I mean do you have anything in common with Israel?”

Braff: “Let me see. Well, I'm predominantly Jewish, I'm very hot and all of my neighbors hate me. So yeah.” [audience laughter]

One often wonders why spoiled Hollywood lefties who have enjoyed every advantage can even imply in any way that there is not freedom in America. A requisite for being a Hollywood success must be that you have to hate America.

My wife loves the show, but now neither she nor I will be able to watch Ugly Betty without thinking that ungrateful America Ferrera hates America, our country.

Edwards: Israel greatest threat to world peace

Peter Bart reports that John Edwards, a Democratic Presidential candidate, feels that Israel is the greatest short-term threat to world peace. Bart relates the following:

The aggressively photogenic John Edwards was cruising along, detailing his litany of liberal causes last week until, during question time, he invoked the "I" word -- Israel. Perhaps the greatest short-term threat to world peace, Edwards remarked, was the possibility that Israel would bomb Iran's nuclear facilities. As a chill descended on the gathering, the Edwards event was brought to a polite close.

More and more virulent anti-Israel rhetoric has been coming from the Democratic party lately. The Democratic Party was once the party that welcomed Jews. No longer. More and more Jews who realize that the Democratic Party is one in which Jews who support Israel are no longer welcome are switching to the Republican Party, which explains the increasing number of Republican Jews. The Republican Party, in contrast, is very supportive of Israel and welcoming to Jews.

A Conversation for the Ages

My friend, Tom Del Beccaro, who was recently elected to the post of Vice Chairman of the California Republican Party, publishes an online political magazine, Political Vanguard. Today he published an article he wrote relaying a conversation between George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Nancy Pelosi. I am reposting it here because it is so on point.

Washington & Lincoln Sit Down
with Nancy Pelosi



In Washington’s Mt. Vernon sitting room, if time had fewer limits, perhaps this is a conversation they would have . . .

Washington: Good evening Mr. President.

Lincoln: Good Evening Mr. President, but, if you will, please call me Abe.

Washington: Thank you Sir, I shall take advantage of such courtesy. Please refer to me as George. I know your travels were long so please stay the evening if not more.

Lincoln: George, I know of your reputation of being far too kind to travelers. So I shall stay tonight. But I shall not overextend my stay as so many others have.

Washington: I am pleased you will stay. Now, in these moments before Madame Pelosi arrives, pray tell, what are your thoughts of these times in which she lives.

Lincoln: They bear a certain resemblance to mine and yours I must say. This President Bush has many doubters, those looking for peace, disappointed by war, occasionally forgetting that true peace is often just an interlude brought on - not by avoidance - but by vigilance.

Washington: Well said, I know in my own time the prospects of our Revolutionary War were more than doubted. In any case, here she comes; let us see what wisdom she can impart on the ages.

Good evening Madame Speaker.

Speaker Pelosi: Good Evening President Washington and President Lincoln.

Washington: Welcome. We have been anxious to speak with you – to understand your perspective. Let us start, if you please, with your view of the Iraq war.

Pelosi: Thank you for speaking with me. I regret to say, however, that it is a failed war. Too many men have died. Our President Bush misled the American people to get them into the war and he has proven to be a very poor Commander in Chief. It is time for us to leave that country. This war has gone on far too long.

Lincoln: If I may, Mr. President.

Washington: Of course, Mr. President.

Lincoln: Madame Speaker, you recall, I trust, that my critics claimed that I lied to get the North into the Civil War. Indeed, at the time a Democrat parodied me with the following:

“Honest old Abe, when the war first began,
Denied abolition was part of his plan;
Honest old Abe has since made a decree,
The war must go on till the slaves are all free.
As both can’t be honest, will some one tell how,
If honest Abe then, he is honest Abe now?”

I tell you this because the reasons to go to war are always much easier to criticize than to justify. As for those that have given their lives in honor of their Country, my own Union Army lost over 7,000 men in the battle of Cold Harbor - more than twice our losses in the 4 years of the Iraq War.

I could never say, however, that my men or any soldier in service of his Country died in vain. In the case of the Civil War, the world’s last best hope was saved.

It is my view, therefore, that the battles of a war, however painful in losses, are not the final arbiter of its purpose. Even at their depths, there are fights which must be undertaken despite their odds.

Washington: Of that last sentiment I know something. Few believed our Revolutionary War would succeed let alone the many that doubted it purpose.

Pelosi: But this President has fought this war so poorly that it is lost.

Washington: Perhaps I know even more about that sentiment. Indeed, as Commander of the Continental Army I am very proud of our victory. But humility and honesty requires me to confess that I lost more battles than I won. Indeed, I lost the battle of New York, and our Capital Philadelphia and overall spent many a month in retreat. Such are the vicissitudes of War. I too must agree with President Lincoln, however, that losses change not the nobility of your purpose.

Pelosi: Maybe so, but this President has failed to properly equip our soldiers and risks still greater losses.

Washington: Madame Speaker, we founded a nation on much less. My army was poorly clothed. We lived in crowded tents through the desperate cold of winter and ran short of supplies. We did so when we were facing the most powerful army in the world, the army of King George. Would you have wanted us to wait until our provisions were of great supply? If so, that war for freedom never would have been fought.

Remember too that we fought 8 years to give you freedom. Given our population at the time, I gather you would have declared that our losses were catastrophic. The patience of history, I believe, views them otherwise.

Pelosi: But you were fighting for democracy, we can have no assurance there will be democracy in the Middle East.

Lincoln: If I my may speak on President Washington’s behalf in this regard.

Washington: Certainly.

Lincoln: At the time our first Commander fought for liberty, there was no example of a working democracy in the world let alone the over 200 democracies of which you know today. The people of his day were allured by the reasoning of Locke and expected the Enlightenment to reach our shores as it had no where else. But they had no assurances. Indeed, they had no clear example at all. In that light, and against those odds, their achievement ranks among history’s greatest.

Washington: Thank you kind Sir.

Lincoln: Not at all, it is on your path that freedom walks.

Pelosi: I see, but I am afraid that the criticism of our Media will not allow for this war to go forward even if we had your wisdom.

Lincoln: Oh my dear Madame, you know little of our history. I was excoriated by the press of our time. I was called “a slangwhanging stump speaker” and a “half-witted usurper.” Newspapers called my Gettysburg address “dishwatery.” President Washington was described as a “scourge and misfortune.” As for the conduct of the war, I am reminded of General Robert E. Lee’s comments during the Civil War:

"Why, it appears that we appointed all of our worst generals to command the armies and we appointed all of our best generals to edit the newspapers. I mean, I found by reading a newspaper that these editor generals saw all of the defects plainly from the start but didn't tell me until it was too late. I'm willing to yield my place to these best generals and I'll do my best for the cause by editing a newspaper."

Washington: A wise man really, as are many Virginians, wouldn’t you say Mr. President?

Lincoln: Yes indeed.

Washington: Well, it is getting late Madame Speaker and we are understandably tired. We have crossed oceans of time to speak with you today. Before we retire, please know that during my Presidency, I resisted joining a political party hoping to demonstrate that true leadership rises above partisanship. During this important time, we hope you understand as much.

Also, keep in mind that in every age there are pacifists. Often they demand peace at any cost. In those same ages, however, history is witness to those much less refined for which the only realm they know is derived from misused power and the only currency they trade is violence.

It is for that reason I said long ago that "There is nothing so likely to produce peace as to be well prepared to meet the enemy." Another great Virginian, our 3rd President, Jefferson later said that "Whatever enables us to go to war, secures our peace." Perhaps more appropriate to your age of terrorism, Jefferson also stated: "An insult unpunished is the parent of many." In your time, President Reagan understood as much when he counseled for “Peace through strength.”

Keep those sentiments in mind and know that leadership concerns itself little with vanity but, instead, with the greater good of all humanity.

Secret Conspiracy of Jews Disclosed

Thomas Lifson, writing in the American Thinker, says

Just when you thought conspiracy theories couldn't get any weirder, along comes one that reaches new comic heights. Except, of course, that there are people who take the lunacy very seriously. For example, the rulers of Iran.

The holocaust denial conference in Tehran featured some bizarre presentations, but news has just reached me of one so over the top that it just begs to be shared with our readers: Jews secretly rule India!

House passes resolution of defeat

The House of Representatives today voted to pass a non-binding resolution of hope for the enemy of the United States. The defeatist resolution was passed 246 - 182 with two Democrats opposing the resolution and 17 white-flag Republicans supporting it. The good news is that the 40 - 60 Republican defectors that the Democrats were predicting didn’t materialize, but 17 was bad enough.

Can you imagine if the House had passed a resolution during WWII which said 1) We support the troops, and 2) We disapprove of President Roosevelt committing any more troops to the invasion at Normandy. The disrespect for our Armed Forces, the providing of hope to our enemies and the surrender mentality is something I wouldn’t have expected from Republicans.

We must keep in mind General Douglas MacArthur’s statement, “There is no substitute for victory.”

Rudy Giuliani speaks to the California GOP

Presidential contender Rudy Giuliani gave a rousing talk about his vision of the future at the California Republican Party Convention in Sacramento today. This post is rather long, but I want to provide more of his 45 minute talk rather than providing snippets or sound bites so you can get the essence of the man. Full disclosure dictates that I inform you that I will be supporting Rudy Giuliani for President in 2008. The following post is not my opinion, however, it is a relating of much of his speech at the Republican Convention today.

The Mayor began his talk by saying, “I like straight talk, and telling the truth.”

He called Ronald Reagan the greatest Republican in the last 100 years. He felt that Reagan was successful in winning the hearts of Americans because he embodied a positive future vision for America. He was an eternal optimist. He stated that Reagan knew how to bring people in – to grow the party – by making the party the party of the future. The goal for Reagan was to make America better for the next generation.

Ronald Reagan, despite opposition from all sides, saw as his goal the defeat of Communism. Rudy sees as his goal the defeat of Islamic terror.

Rudy postulated that American ideals come from God. That we are engaged in a war, but it isn’t just a military war. It is also a debate, which we can win. It is a war of ideas.

Republican Party the party of freedom.


He went on to say that the Republican Party is the Party of Freedom. It is the Party of Lincoln. If we are interested in reviving our party then we must emphasize what we stand for, not what we are against. We have to emphasize that we are at our best when we expand freedom.

He stated that he reduced crime in New York because if you live in an environment of fear, or an environment of tyranny, you are not free. That is the way Iraqis are now living in Baghdad, and we are attempting to do the same thing there that Rudy did in New York – clean up the streets and create an environment that removes fear and tyranny. In other words, bring them freedom.

He then went on to talk about how he cleaned up New York. When he came into the office of Mayor there were 1.1 Million people on welfare. There were 2,000 felonies being committed in the city a week. The city had a $3 Billion deficit. He looked at the situation and decided that you solve problems like these from a position of strength, not weakness, from a position of optimism not pessimism.

He gave freedom to New Yorkers by cutting the welfare roles in half. He felt that it was better to give people a hand up than a handout. He cut the crime rate substantially and went from a $3 Billion deficit to a $2 Billion surplus. He reduced taxes 27 times during his administration. He found it consistent each time he did it that revenue increased. The city would collect more revenue from lower taxes than from higher.


Schools

As far as schools are concerned, he wants to take the evaluation of schools away from bureaucrats and give it to parents. He says that the Republican Party is for parents and the Democratic Party for bureaucrats.

Health Care

With health coverage, he noted that the U.S. has the best health care in the world. When was the last time someone went to another country to get a heart operation or major surgery? They are all coming here from other countries to get medical treatment.

We have problems in our health care system, he stated, but we also have great strengths. We can use Republican principles of free markets to solve our problems. He then gave some examples of expanding health savings accounts, reforming judicial awards, giving insurance companies incentives to issue private policies without mandates. Government should not be involved in health care decisions, according to Giuliani. Those decisions should only be between the patient and his or her doctor.

Non-binding resolution

Giuliani says,

“I don’t get non-binding resolutions. In the business world, if you spent two weeks working on a non-binding resolution it would be considered non-productive. It is a comment without making a decision. We have Tim Russert, Sean Hannity and other commentators who can make comments. We pay our legislators to make decisions.”

He went on to say that we are fortunate to have George W. Bush as our President at this time. He doesn’t test the wind, but goes ahead and makes decisions. Presidents, he said, don’t have the luxury of making non-binding resolutions. They have to make decisions. “That is the kind of President I want to be” he stated.

War on Terror

Rudy feels we need to remind people around the world about America. America is not about war. America is about peace. However, we learned that you achieve peace through strength, not weakness. He feels that every American, whether you agree with the war in Iraq or not, should support and pray for the success of our troops in Iraq. He says he visited a navy base earlier in the week. He related that he asked them to tell him about Iraq. He said, "I am not the President, don’t tell me what you think I want to hear, tell me the truth." They told him, “Tell the American people that we know what we are doing. Give us a chance to get it right.” Giuliani says that is a consistent message he hears from our servicemen.

He went on to say that as far as Iraq is concerned, we have to get it right. If we don't it will be a continuing threat to America and to our allies.

The first Republican president (Lincoln) faced similar circumstances. He committed the country into the Civil War saying it would be over in six months. Two years later we were still at war and things had gone really badly. There were many casualties and war was still being waged. People were frustrated. There were draft riots in New York. Newspapers were calling for an end to the war. People were saying to forget it and bring the troops home. However, Lincoln had a vision. He wanted to end slavery and free the slaves. He would not be deterred from that goal. Giuliani goes on to say that Lincoln was our greatest president because he had a vision for the future, knew he would succeed, and let nothing stand in his way.

Reagan, Guiliani says, also in spite of opposition from the American people and the media, knew he would defeat Communism. Newspaper editorials at the time said that Reagan was going to get us into a nuclear war. They editorialized that we were wasting resources and that we would never defeat the Soviet Union. Reagan, too, had a vision, knew he would succeed and wouldn’t be deterred.

He then went on to say that the War on Terror is more like the Cold War than like World War II. It will take a lot of time to ultimately prevail, just as the Cold War did. He says that he, like Lincoln and like Reagan, has a vision for the future, knows he will succeed and won’t be deterred. He says that he knows we will prevail in the war on terror because he has seen what Americans are made of. He then went on to describe the heroism and selflessness of the firefighters, police and rescue workers on 9/11.

He concluded his talk by saying that people who live in freedom have more strength and more optimism than people who don’t. "We need leadership that reflects that strength and optimism and moves America toward the future. You get to decide who that is.”

Imam prays to stop "Oppression and Occupation" at DNC Meeting

Hot Air has video of an invocation at the winter meeting of the Democratic National Committee by Husham Al-Husainy, Imam of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center, a Shi'ite mosque in Dearborn, Michigan.

Here's a transcript:

In the name of God the most merciful, the most compasionate. We thank you, God, to bless us among your creations. We thank you, God, to make us as a great nation. We thank you God, to send us your messages through our father Abraham and Moses and Jesus and Mohammed. Through you, God, we unite. So guide us to the right path. The path of the people you bless, not the path of the people you doom. Help us God to liberate and fill this earth with justice and peace and love and equality. And help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation. Ameen.

In mentioning "Abraham and Moses and Jesus and Mohammed" I expect that he sounded wonderfully generous and ecumenical to the assembled Democrats. But in fact, he was almost certainly invoking them in their capacity as Muslim prophets: it is mainstream Islam that all of these were prophets who taught Islam, and that the followers of Moses and Jesus corrupted their teachings to create Judaism and Christianity. So what seems to be a gesture of ecumenical generosity is actually a declaration of religious imperialism and the delegitimization of other religions.

Also, imagine if a Christian priest or minister had prayed at a DNC meeting that those attending be guided away from the path of those doomed by God. In this, in any case, the Imam is echoing the Fatiha, the first sura of the Qur'an and most common prayer of Islam. It asks Allah: "Show us the straight path, the path of those whom Thou hast favoured; not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray." The traditional Islamic understanding of this is that the "straight path" is Islam -- cf. Islamic apologist John Esposito's book Islam: The Straight Path. The path of those who have earned Allah's anger are the Jews, and those who have gone astray are the Christians. The classic Qur'anic commentator Ibn Kathir explains:

Allah asserted that the two paths He described here are both misguided when He repeated the negation `not'. These two paths are the paths of the Christians and Jews, a fact that the believer should beware of so that he avoids them. The path of the believers is knowledge of the truth and abiding by it. In comparison, the Jews abandoned practicing the religion, while the Christians lost the true knowledge. This is why `anger' descended upon the Jews, while being described as `led astray' is more appropriate of the Christians. Those who know, but avoid implementing the truth, deserve the anger, unlike those who are ignorant. The Christians want to seek the true knowledge, but are unable to find it because they did not seek it from its proper resources.

This is why they were led astray. We should also mention that both the Christians and the Jews have earned the anger and are led astray, but the anger is one of the attributes more particular of the Jews. Allah said about the Jews,

[مَن لَّعَنَهُ اللَّهُ وَغَضِبَ عَلَيْهِ]

The attribute that the Christians deserve most is that of being led astray, just as Allah said about them,

[قَدْ ضَلُّواْ مِن قَبْلُ وَأَضَلُّواْ كَثِيراً وَضَلُّواْ عَن سَوَآءِ السَّبِيلِ]

(Who went astray before and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the right path) (5:77).

It is interesting to see the Democrats standing with heads bowed piously while the Imam Husham Al-Husainy prays, in veiled terms to be sure, for their conversion to Islam, and oh yes, for the destruction of Israel ("And help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation").

Does anyone wonder, as I do, why they chose a Muslim and not a Christian to give the invocation?
